HELEN CARNES

Helen M. Carnes, 78, formerly of Cambridge, and more recently a resident of Canton, died Sunday (May 6, 2001) in Aultman Hospital.

She was born Aug. 7, 1922, in Cambridge, daughter of the late Donald Benson and Jennie Mae (Hicks) Kelley.

Mrs. Carnes lived all of her life in Cambridge moving to Canton in December l987.

She was a retired medical secretary in the office of Dr. Howard VanNoate, Dr. Jon Haun and Dr. Richard Whiteleather, retiring in 1987.

Following her retirement, she was an employee in the office of Dr. Mangala Betkurur until 1995.

She was a member of Trinity Gospel Temple, Senior Adult Fellowship, Care Leader, Business and Professional Women's group in Cambridge, Canton Jewish Community Center and its Senior Adult Center.

She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Alan Carnes; her husband, the Rev. Kenneth J. Carnes, who died in 1977; and a brother, Donald Benson Kelley Jr.

She leaves a daughter, Sharon M. Carnes of Canton; two sisters, Mrs. Richard (Dorothy) Kissinger, Mrs. William (Ruth) Grubbs, both of Cambridge; an aunt, Jessie Gill of Cambridge; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Gospel Temple, 1612 Tuscarawas St., West, Canton, with services to follow at 11 a.m. with her daughter, the Rev. Sharon M. Carnes and Rev. David Lombardi officiating.

Graveside services and burial will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Northwood Cemetery, Cambridge.

Memorials contributions may be made to Trinity Gospel Temple, 1612 Tuscarawas St., West, Canton.

ROGER LEASURE

WOODSFIELD — Roger Leasure, 66, of Lewisville, died Monday (May 7, 2001) at Marietta Memorial Hospital, Marietta.

Arrangements are pending at Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield.

JENNIE REES

Jennie Elizabeth Rees, 80, of West Lafayette Nursing Center, died Monday (May 7, 2001) at the center.

She was born July 19, 1920, in Caldwell, daughter of the late Robinson “Bob” and Bessie (Wyersmiller) Sanderson.

Mrs. Rees had worked 10 years at The Ohio State University Extension office of Guernsey County. She was a 1938 graduate of Buffalo High School and a Protestant by faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William G. Rees, in 1973; an infant daughter; three infant sons; four brothers; and four sisters.

She leaves a son, Steven (Sharon Anderson) Rees of Cambridge; a sister-in-law, Ann Sanderson of Canton; two step-grandchildren, Jennifer Lashley and Dale Milhoan; and two step-great-grandchildren.

No calling hours or services will be observed.

Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Caldwell, at a later date.

MARY SCOTT

SEBRING — Mary S. Scott, 65, died Sunday (May 6, 2001) at Altercare of Alliance.

She was born Aug. 2, 1935, in Byesville, daughter of the Florence (Thompson) Sigman of Byesville, and late James A. Sigman.

Mrs. Scott was a state certified health aide having worked for Caring Hands and was co-owner of County Goose Craft and Ceramic Shop in Byesville.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Regina Suzanne Hutchison and Maralan Lee Scott; three sisters, Maralan McElory, Cheryl Thompson and Chariotte Melban.

She leaves three daughters, Tina White, Resa Scott and June Wyss, all of Sebring; a son, Ray Scott Jr. of Sebring; two sisters, Sandra West of Byesville, and Pam Callahan of Pleasant City; three brothers, Eddie Sigman of Byesville, Ramon Sigman of Cambridge, and Donnie Sigman of Cleveland; six grandsons; and a granddaughter.

A private memorial service will be Saturday at Fellowship Baptist Church in Beloit, with Pastor James White officiating.

The family will receive friends at the home of Tina and Rick White, 265 W. Maryland Ave., from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday.

DR. DAVID STURTEVANT

NEW CONCORD — Dr. David R. Sturtevant, 74, of New Concord, died Sunday (May 6, 2001) at Genesis-Bethesda Hospital, Zanesville.

He was born Sept. 20, 1926, in Zanesville, son of the late Frank and Nina (Anderson) Sturtevant.
Dr. Sturtevant served as professor of history at Muskingum College from 1955-1994 and on a part-time basis to the present.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II.

He graduated magna cum laude in 1950 from Muskingum College, having earned a bachelor of arts degree. In 1951 he earned a master of arts degree in Southeast Asian history and in 1958 a Ph.D. in East and Southeast Asian history, both from Stanford University.

He was a Fulbright researcher in the Philippines from 1965-66 at the University of the Philippines and Ataneo de Manila University.

He was visiting American specialist for the Department of State in summer 1968 in Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Philippines to lecture on Philippine history.

He was visiting professor at The University of Hawaii from 1976-77, where he taught Philippine history and Philippine studies.

He was former president of R.E. New, the group that worked with the village of New Concord to obtain funding and private donations to construct entrance parks at the west, east and south corporation limits, enhance water supply, improve visual quality of the village and worked toward the creation of the John and Annie Glenn Museum.

He leaves his wife, Joy (Stewart) Sturtevant; a daughter, Mrs. Michael (Lynne) Pingrey of Arlington, Va.; two sons, Mark Sturtevant of Nashville, Tenn., and Jim (Penny) Sturtevant of Galena; a sister, Doris Sturtevant of Fairborn; a brother, Hank (Adrian) Sturtevant of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and three grandchildren, Jason, David and Maria Sturtevant.

Services will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Brown Chapel, Muskingum College, with Dr. Harold Kaser officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

GARY THOMPSON

Gary Ellis Thompson, 41, of Cambridge, died Sunday (May 6, 2001) due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Coshocton County.

He was born Feb. 25, 1960, in Cambridge, son of Hazel (Morris) Thompson Ayers of Pleasant City, and the late William Ben Thompson.

Mr. Thompson was a factory worker at Byesville Aseptics and was a Protestant by faith.

He leaves in addition to his mother, his step-father, James Ayers of Pleasant City; four daughters, Melissa Thompson of Newark, Amber Thompson, Kayla Thompson and Sherri Thompson, all of Cambridge; two brothers, Kenny (Rebecca) Thompson of Byesville, and Bill (Denise) Thompson of Cambridge; two sisters, Barbara Allen and Mrs. John (Brenda) Berger, both of Cambridge; and a granddaughter, Taylor Marie Thompson.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, where services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday with Pastor Steve Leathley officiating.

Burial will be in Kennonsburg Cemetery.
