H. BURTON ‘TUBBY’ HOTHEM

                                                                 1909-2001

NEWCOMERSTOWN — Howard Burton “Tubby” Hothem, 91, a resident of Riverside Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the past three years and longtime resident of West Main Street, Newcomerstown, died Saturday (May 5, 2001) at the center.

He was born Oct. 14, 1909, in Coshocton County, son of the late Edward G. and Eva (Harstine) Hothem.

Mr. Hothem was a 1927 graduate of Newcomerstown High School. He was employed by the former Heller Brothers Tool Co., Newcomerstown, for more than 40 years, where he operated the drop forge hammer.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Newcomerstown, Tuscarawas County AAA and was a life member of Newcomerstown Elks Lodge 1555.

He served as a chef at the Elks Lodge for more than 25 years.

He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, cooking and watching football.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Hothem; and two sisters, Helen Hothem and Irene Domer.

He leaves his wife, Mary Bernice (Brown) Hothem of Newcomerstown, whom he married April 11, 1943; a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth B. (Janet A.) Dodds of Pinehurst, N.C.; two granddaughters, Tracey L. Dodds of Framingham, Mass., and Deborah L. Dodds of Randolph, Mass.; a sister, Edna Booth of Zanesville; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ourant Funeral Home, Newcomerstown, where services will follow with Pastor William C. Haggis II officiating. Elks Lodge 1555 will have services at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Fairfield Cemetery, West Lafayette.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rebuilding Fund, St. Paul Lutheran Church, 121 S. College St., Newcomerstown, OH 43832.

MARGARET ‘PEG’ FERRELL

1911-2001

FREEPORT — Margaret Isabelle “Peg” Ferrell, 89, of Steele Crest Apartments, Freeport, died Friday (May 4, 2001) at Twin City Health Care Center, Uhrichsville.

She was born Aug. 29, 1911, in Cadiz, daughter of the late Edward J. and Emma J. (Naragon) Nolan.

Mrs. Ferrell was a 1928 graduate of Freeport High School. She was a member of Freeport United Methodist Church and Freeport Order of Eastern Star.

She was a former member of Washington Township (Tippecanoe) Volunteer Firemen’s Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hal Ferrell, on June 17, 1985. They were married July 1, 1933. Also deceased are two sisters, Mary Lynn and Edna Tucker.

She leaves several nieces and nephews.

No calling hours will be observed.

Graveside services and burial will be 11 a.m. Monday at Greenmont Union Cemetery, Freeport, with the Rev. Ward Murray officiating.

Koch Funeral Home, Freeport, is handling the arrangements.

REBECCA HURSEY

1917-2001

NEWCOMERSTOWN — Rebecca Hursey, 83, of New Philadelphia, formerly of Gilmore, died Thursday (May 3, 2001) at Morning View Care Center, New Philadelphia.

She was born Sept. 8, 1917, in Adena, daughter of the late Emmerson and Bertha (Morris) Fouts.
Mrs. Hursey was a 1936 graduate of Uhrichsville High School. She was a homemaker and a member of West Union United Methodist Church of Gilmore.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hursey, on Sept. 15, 1989. They were married June 1, 1946. Also deceased are a son, a daughter and a brother.

She leaves a son, Gary “Butch” (Joanne Jordan) Hursey of Port Washington; three daughters, Sandra Hursey of the home, Mrs. Robert (Carolyn) Neumeyer of Dover, and Mrs. Robert (Jane Louise) Wiley of Palmetto, Fla.; five grandchildren, Craig Hursey, Robert Alexander, Robb Neumeyer, Krista Neumeyer and Cheryl Weisen; a great-grandson, Robert Alexander; a brother, Everett Blaylock of Rapid City, S.D.; and a sister, Grace Goodwin of Barberton.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Addy Funeral Home, Newcomerstown, with the Rev. Thomas Gruver officiating.

Burial will be in Community Chapel Cemetery, Newcomerstown.
