Harry F. 'Shun' McLaughlin Jr.

CARROLLTON — Harry F. “Shun” McLaughlin Jr., 82, of Cambridge, died suddenly Tuesday (March 6, 2001) at Alliance Community Hospital.

He was born Sept. 1, 1918, in Carrollton, son of the late Harry F. and Florence (McCully) McLaughlin Sr.

Mr. McLaughlin was fire chief in Carrollton from 1940 to 1958. He was inducted into the Ohio Fire Services Hall of Fame in 1996, and was presented Ohio’s Distinguished Fire Service Award by Gov. George V. Voinovich in 1996. He was an arson investigator for the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office having retired in 1993 after 35 years of service.

He was a member of Christ’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Cambridge, Carroll Lodge F&AM 124, Carrollton, Commandry 38 of Canton, Royal Arch Masons 123 of Carrollton, and Tadmor Shrine.

He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, having served in World War II.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Eileen Fisher, on March 27, 1994. They were married Oct. 12, 1940.

He leaves a son, Carl K. McLaughlin of Strongsville; a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Linda) Sauter of Pickerington; a brother, Robert O. McLaughlin of Sanibel Island, Fla.; a sister, Retha V. Day of Cambridge; six grandchildren.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Scott Funeral Home, Cambridge.

Additional calling hours will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at Allmon-Dugger and Hively Funeral Home, Carrollton, where services will follow at 2 p.m. Masonic services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Carrollton funeral home.

Burial will be in Westview Cemetery.
