Sylvia D. (Kildow) Clifton

McCONNELSVILLE — Sylvia D. (Kildow) Clifton, 89, of Cumberland, died Tuesday (March 20, 2001) at Summit Acres Nursing Home, Caldwell.

She was born June 8, 1911, in Wood Grove, daughter of the late Ernest E. and Vesta L. (Still) Kildow.

Mrs. Clifton was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Clifton, on Jan. 31, 1982; four sisters; two brothers; a son, Bob Clifton; and a granddaughter.

She leaves three sons, Dick D. Clifton and Jim E. (Violet) Clifton, all of Cumberland, and Jack L. (Bonnie) Clifton of Eagleport; a sister, June C. Shafer of Canton; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services and burial will be 11 a.m. Friday at McConnelsville Cemetery with Pastor Galen Finley officiating.

Fred M. Finnen

ZANESVILLE — Fred M. Finnen, 76, of Zanesville, died Wednesday (March 21, 2001) at his home.

He was born Sept. 2, 1924, in New Lexington, son of the late William and Helen (Stine) Finnen.

Mr. Finnen was a 1942 graduate of New Lexington High School.

He retired in September 1989 from the Kroger Co., where he served as a store manager in Cambridge, Lancaster and Zanesville for 43 years.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, having served from 1942-46 as staff sergeant.

He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dr. Karl Finnen and Paul Finnen.

He leaves his wife, Jennie Rose (Hickman) Finnen of the home, whom he married April 27, 1945; two daughters, Mrs. Edgar (Carol) Smith of Washington Court House, and Mrs. Fred (Penny) Dilley of Cambridge; two sons, Fred (Sarah) Finnen II of Newark, and Patrick (Maureen) Finnen of Lexington; nine grandchildren, Amy (Toby) Settles, Paul Smith, Fred Dilley, Jennifer Dilley, Michelle (Robb) Dilley-Walrath, Daphne Finnen, Fred Finnen III, Patrick Finnen and Soibhan Finnen; two great-granddaughters, Kennedy and Kassandra Settles; four brothers, William Finnen of Cincinnati, George Finnen of Lancaster, Gerald Finnen of Raleigh, N.C., and Leo Finnen of Minster; a sister, Mrs. Bob (Marilyn) Schumacher of Lancaster; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Karl (Martha) Finnen of Cincinnati, and Mrs. Henry (Clara) Hickman of Lancaster.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hillis Funeral Home, Zanesville. A Christian vigil service will be 3:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Michael DeTemple officiating.

Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Zanesville.

John Howard Mathews

John Howard Mathews, 84, of Kimbolton, died Wednesday (March 21, 2001) at his home.

He was born Dec. 25, 1916, in Washington, Pa., son of the late Alfred I. and Rissa B. (Martin) Mathews.

Mr. Mathews spent 36 years working as a carpenter in Columbus. He was an associate member of North Salem Presbyterian Church.

He was a 1935 graduate of Brown High School, and a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray Mathews and Dick Mathews.

He leaves his wife, Stella M. (Cooper) Mathews of Kimbolton, whom he married July 8, 1939; a son, Kenneth Howard (Joyce) Mathews of Pataskala; a nephew, Ron Mathews of Dover; two grandchildren, Mrs. Jim (Alicia) Dupler of Thronville, and Mrs. Darren (Jennie) Cook of Marysville; two great-grandchildren, Nathan and Blake Dupler.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Bundy-Law Funeral Home, Cambridge, where services will be 11 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Dr. Herbert Thompson officiating.

Burial will be in Guernsey Memory Gardens.

Linda Jean Betts

BARNESVILLE — Linda Jean Betts, 55, of Jerusalem, died Wednesday (March 21, 2001) at her home.

She was born Aug. 31, 1945, in Wheeling, W.Va., daughter of the late Howard and Merle (Burkhimer) Curtis.

Mrs. Betts was a member of Somerton United Methodist Church, the Farm Bureau, and was a 4-H adviser.

She leaves her husband, Robert Betts; a son, Dale (Lynn) Betts of Somerton; a daughter, Dorinda Betts of Jerusalem; a sister, Brenda Hoskinson of Bellaire; three grandchildren.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Campbell-Plumly-Milburn Funeral Home, Barnesville, where services will be 11 a.m. Friday.

Burial will be in Calais Cemetery, Calais.

Lewis J. Springer

Lewis J. Springer, 78, formerly of Cambridge, died Saturday (March 17, 2001) in Chandler, Ariz., where he had lived for the past six years.

He was born April 5, 1922, in Cambridge, son of the late Wilbur and Hazel Springer.

Mr. Springer was a 1940 graduate of Brown High School. He retired from Phillips Products of Cambridge.

He was a longtime volunteer for the Red Cross at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center. He delivered Meals-On-Wheels and did volunteer work for his community in Arizona.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, A. Yvonne (Kennon) Springer, on May 20, 1995.

He leaves three daughters, Mrs. Art (Carol) Meyer of Lexington, Mrs. Tony (Shannon) Delewese of Sagle, Idaho, and Mrs. Paul (Bonnie) Thompson of New Concord; two sons, Steve (Carol) Springer of Mesa, Ariz., and Mark (Jolene) Springer of Rapid City, S.D.; eight grandchildren, Scott (Jill) Stevens, Mrs. Randy (Shannon) Green and Mrs. Mark (Sarah) Bartlett, all of Cambridge, Eric (Kat) Meyer of Cleveland, Mrs. Eric (Julie) Curtis of Lexington, Leah and Brenden Delewese of Sagle, Idaho, and Hannah Springer of Rapid City, S.D.; seven great-grandchildren, Ashley, Makenzie and Devin Stevens, Leah and Joey Green, Alyssa Bartlett and Kailer Delewese.

Memorial services will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at Bundy-Law Funeral Home, Cambridge, with the Rev. Ken Phillips officiating.

A private burial for the family will be at Northwood Cemetery.

Kenneth R. Paden

Kenneth R. Paden, 64, of Cambridge, died Wednesday (March 21, 2001) at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 1, 1936, in Fairview, Guernsey County, son of the late Raymond and Charlene (Ross) Paden.

Mr. Paden worked for the Ohio Department of Transportation for 18 years. He retired from the Street Department of Cambridge, where he had served for 23 years. He also was a concrete worker for Paden Concrete. He was a member of Center United Methodist Church and was an Ohio Army National Guard member.

He was a member of Guernsey Lodge 632 F&AM, currently holding office of Lodge education officer. He was a plural member of Cambridge Lodge 66 F&AM, and also a plural member of Quaker City 500 F&AM, which he served as master in 1978, 1980-83, 1985-86, 1988 and 2001. He was an honorary member of Freeport Lodge 415 F&AM and Byesville Lodge 654 F&AM.

He was a member of Scottish Rite Valley of Cambridge Class of 1975, having served as Thrice Potent master 1998-99. Kenny was elected to receive his 33rd degree at the 2001 meeting of the Supreme Council.

He was a member of Aladdin Temple Shrine, Columbus, and Kambri Shrine Club, Cambridge, which he served as district educational officer from 1982-83. He was a member of Cambridge Chapter 53 Royal Arch Masons, Guernsey Council 74 Royal and Select Masons and Cambridge Commandrey Knights Templar.

He was trustee of the 23rd Masonic District Past Masters Association.

He was a 1954 graduate of Madison High School.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Susan.

He leaves his wife, Belva (Price) Paden of Cambridge, whom he married June 4, 1961; two sons, Kenneth Ray Paden II of Columbus, and Philip (Jillian) Paden of Pataskala; four sisters, Jean Blitchington of Columbus, Mrs. James (Marjorie) Caldwell and Barbara Paden, all of Cambridge, and Mrs. Kenneth (Paulette) Gunn of Kimbolton; two brothers, Robert (Wanda) Paden of Freeport, and Bernard (Vera) Paden of Old Washington; a grandson, Jonathan Paden; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Bundy-Law Funeral Home, Cambridge. Masonic services will be 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Center United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Denny Nelson officiating.

Burial will be in Center Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Center United Methodist Church, Cambridge.

Garry L. and Karen (Householder) Smith services

ZANESVILLE — Services for Garry L. and Karen (Householder) Smith, of Chandlersville, who died Monday (March 19, 2001) at their home, will be 11 a.m. Friday at Hillis Funeral Home, 935 Forest Ave., Zanesville.

Burial will be in Zanesville Memorial Park.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Florence Eulenberg

Florence Eulenberg, 89, a resident of Bell Nursing Home, Kimbolton, died Wednesday (March 21, 2001) at the nursing home.

She was born July 6, 1911.

She was a retired housekeeper.

She leaves her many dear friends at Bell Nursing Home.

There will be no calling hours or services observed.

Burial will be in Kimbolton Cemetery, at a later date.

Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, is handling the arrangements.

Wendell J. “Andy” Yanai Jr. services

NEWCOMERSTOWN — Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Ourant Funeral Home, Newcomerstown, for Wendell J. “Andy” Yanai Jr., 91, of Newcomerstown, who died Tuesday (March 20, 2001) at St. Ann’s Hospital, Westerville.

Pastor William C. Haggis II will officiate. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery, Newcomerstown.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday with services to follow.

He was born March 22, 1909, in Newcomerstown, son of the late Wendell J. and Rosalie Yanai.

Mr. Yanai was a 1930 graduate of Newcomerstown High School. He attended business schools in Milwaukee and Columbus and took business courses at The Ohio State University and the University of Akron.

He retired in 1971 from Heller Brothers Tool Co., Newcomerstown, where he served in the accounting department as treasurer and comptroller for more than 37 years.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Newcomerstown. He was a charter member of Newcomerstown Lions Club, where he held several offices over many years. He was a life member and oldest living past exalted ruler of Newcomerstown Elks Lodge 1555. He served as the clerk-treasurer for the Village of Newcomerstown for 10 years.

He also did personal accounting services for individual and commercial accounts for all of his life. He was an active speaker for many civic and business organizations throughout his life. He was a member of the Financial Executives Institute and the National Association of Accountants.

He enjoyed golfing, bowling and playing the clarinet. He was a member of the former Charlie Leiser Band and the St. Paul Lutheran Church Band.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Louise (Reddick) Yanai, in 1931; his second wife, Laura C. (Fillman) Yanai, in 1988. Andy and Laura were married July 7, 1934. Also deceased is a son, Gregory J. Yanai; several brothers and sisters, including Elmer Yanai, Chris Yanai, Helen Basiletti, Irene Williams, and Henry J. “Sharkey” Yanai.

He leaves two sons, Richard E. (Shirley A.) Tyler of Pickerington, and Ronald G. (Donna J.) Yanai of Columbus; five grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Andrew P. “A.P.” (Doris) Yanai of Newcomerstown; two sisters, Ann Abbott of Coshocton, and Mrs. Tony (Rose) Tomasina of Dennison; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Pearl S. Householder services

LONDONDERRY — Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Bond Funeral Home, Londonderry, for Pearl S. Householder, 87, who died Tuesday (March 20, 2001) at Cambridge Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Pastor Bob Merritt will officiate. Private burial will be at Holly Memorial Gardens, Harrisville.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

She was born near Huntington, W.Va., daughter of the late Andrew and Druzilla Simpkins.

Mrs. Householder will be remembered for her Christian faith, her compassion and the wonderful meals she served at Camp Presmont. When questioned as to what the secret ingredient was for her “good cooking,” she replied, “love.”

Family and friends celebrate her life and thank God for sharing her with us.

She was a member of Oak Grove Calvary Chapel.

She was preceded in death by her husband, H.L. “Red” Householder, in 1972; six brothers; five sisters.

She leaves a daughter, Mrs. John (Bev) Duffy of Freeport; two sons, Raymond L. (Dorothy) Householder of Piedmont and Charles (Kathy) Householder of Seymour, Conn.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Jessie Belle (Pyles) Jones, services

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, for Jessie Belle (Pyles) Jones, 84, of Zanesville, who died Wednesday (March 21, 2001) at ODC Nursing Home, Zanesville.

Burial will be in Northwood Cemetery.

She was born Oct. 16, 1916, in Noble County, daughter of the late Fred and Clara (Slater) McKee.

Mrs. Jones was a homemaker and member of Norwich Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dallas Pyles, on Nov. 6, 1972; her second husband, Charles O. Jones, on April 27, 1975; a son, Tony Pyles; two brothers, William McKee and Raymond McKee.

She leaves two daughters, Kay Rutter of Niles, and Mrs. Adam (Ruby) Johnstone of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Faye Mishlan of Cambridge; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren.

Helen L. Major services

CADIZ — Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Clark-Kirkland Funeral Home, Cadiz, for Helen L. Major, 98, of Cadiz, formerly of Route 1, Flushing, who died Wednesday (March 21, 2001) at Harrison County Home, Cadiz.

The Rev. William Hudson will officiate. Burial will be in Rock Hill Cemetery, Flushing.

Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

She was born Sept. 15, 1902, in Holloway, daughter of the late Walter B. and Corella (Price) Murphy.

Mrs. Major was a former member of Nottingham Presbyterian Church, near Cadiz, where she was also a member of the Missionary Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Major, in 1977; two sons, Harold and Dwight Major; three brothers, Claire, Paul and Ray Murphy; a sister, Irene Campbell Abel.

She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Shirley) Yovanovich of Cadiz, and Mrs. John (Marjorie) Pauley of Columbus; seven grandchildren; three great-grandsons; a great-granddaughter; two sisters, Lula Lawlis of Cadiz, and Lola Major of Barnesville; several nieces and nephews.
