Fred (Bud) Steele

Fred C. (Bud) Steele, retired chief of the Cambridge Fire Department whose family name was synonymous with firefighting here, died Friday (March 16, 2001) at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center.

During his years of service to the community, Chief Steele, 68, was one of the most popular and best-known firefighters in the area.

He was born June 28, 1932, son of Fred V. Steele and Dorothy Steele. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Cambridge.

Chief Steele joined the department on Oct. 16, 1952. It was a tradition in his family — his father, Fred Steele Sr., was a member of the department for approximately 30 years, having joined it in the 1940s when it was a volunteer department.

Chief Steele rose through the ranks and was named chief on April 20, 1977. He retired in October 1982.

During his service on the fire department, Chief Steele saw the department expand in service and scope. When Chief Steele joined the fire department, it and the police department and most other city offices shared quarters in the Municipal Building on Southgate Parkway. In the late 1970s, the fire department, with the support of the community, built larger quarters on Gaston Avenue.

Chief Steele loved fishing.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marlene Mercer Steele, who died in 1970.

He leaves his wife, Linda Steele of Cambridge; three daughters, Mrs. Gary (Cathy) Fields of Bonita Springs, Fla., Mrs. Eric (Kammy) Gaumer of Zanesville and Mrs. Richard (Kathy) Mayo of Whitehall; a son, Sanford (Tammy) Grant of West Valley, Utah; and six grandchildren.
