William Meighen Jr.
victim of house fire, succumbs at 63                                        at 63

            William Meighen Jr., the 63-year-old Cambridge resident injured in
            a November house fire, has died from his injuries.

            Cambridge firefighters were dispatched to 311 Foster Ave. shortly
            after 2 a.m. on Nov. 22. Gaining entry to the single-story home, units
            found the fire had spread to the attic. It was later determined
            combustibles stacked next to a wood-burning stove had ignited.

            Mr. Meighen was believed to have escaped the burning home
            through a bathroom window. Transported to Southeastern Ohio
            Regional Medical Center, he was later flown by helicopter to the
            burn center at Akron Children’s Hospital in “critical” condition with
            second-degree burns to his head, chest and hands, as well as
            smoke inhalation. He was subsequently upgraded to “serious”
            condition, but died there Thursday (Dec. 7, 2000).

            He was born Sept. 19, 1937, in Byesville, son of the late William
            and Thelma (Ridgely) Meighen.

            He retired after 30 years as a maintenance worker at the former
            Cambridge State Hospital. He was a member of Cambridge
            Eagles Aerie 386 and the Cambridge Moose Lodge. He graduated
            from the former Brown High School and was a U.S. Navy veteran.

            In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife,
            Diane S. Meighen, who died May 3, 2000.

            He leaves three sons, Steve (Joyce) Meighen, Kenneth (Cynthia)
            Meighen and Roger (Linda) Meighen, all of Cambridge; three
            aunts; and 11 grandchildren.

            Friends and family may call 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Thorn-Black
            Funeral Home, Cambridge, where services will be Wednesday with
            Pastor Jerry Blankenship officiating.

            Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery , Byesville.

                                 Loretta A. Hare

            Loretta A. Hare, 71, of Quaker City, died Saturday (Dec. 9, 2000)
            at her residence.

            She was born May 7, 1929, in Fleming, W.Va., daughter of the late
            Arthur and Vanila (Reed) Roy. She married Jerry L. Hare on July
            27, 1958.

            In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother,
            Gerald Roy.

            In addition to her husband, she leaves six daughters, Carol Rosario
            of Quaker City, Terry Mozena of Cambridge, Toni Stacho of
            Strongsville, Diana Hollis and Janet Johnston, both of Cambridge,
            and Tammie Reed of Cleveland; two sons, Michael Hare of
            Cleveland and Jerry Hare of Parma; four sisters, Eileen Svagerko
            of Cleveland, Betty Boyer of Brownton, W.Va., Wanda Russ of
            West Virginia and Joan Roy of Texas; and two brothers, Stanley
            Roy and Ronny Roy, both of Cleveland; 16 grandchildren; and four
            great-grandchildren.

            Friends and family may call 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at Bundy-Law
            Funeral Home, where services will be 1 p.m. Monday with the Rev.
            Dan Svagerko officiating.

            Burial will be in Old Washington Cemetery.

                            Sarah Elizabeth Cameron

            Sarah Elizabeth Cameron, 87, of New Concord, died Friday (Dec.
            8, 2000) at The Beckett House.

            She was born Dec. 21, 1912, in Norwich, daughter of the late
            George and Edith Sherman.

            She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and a bookkeeper
            for Cameron Jewelry.

            In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
            husband, Beryl Cameron, who died Oct. 14, 1973; a son, Donald E.
            Cameron; a sister Alma Hall; and three brothers, Finley R.
            Sherman, Albert L. Sherman and George D. Sherman.

            She leaves two sisters, Mary Jane Lyon of Ravenna and Marjorie
            Wolgamott of Cambridge; two brothers, Robert W. Sherman of
            McConnelsville and John C. Sherman of Cincinnati; two
            sisters-in-law, Mary Evelyn Sherman of McConnelsville and Shirley
            L. Sherman of Amlin; several nieces and nephews, cousins and
            many friends.

            Friends and family may call today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 1 to 2 p.m.
            Monday at Scott Funeral Home, where services will be 2 p.m.
            Monday with the Rev. Michael Seely officiating.

            Burial will be in Northwood Cemetery.

            favorite charity.

                                Norma J. McCune

            NEWCOMERSTOWN — Norma J. McCune, 67, of Port
            Washington, died Friday (Dec. 8, 2000) at Southeastern Ohio
            Regional Medical Center, Cambridge.

            She was born March 8, 1933, in West Lafayette, daughter of the
            late Walter Baker and Mildred (Apple) Baker Archer. She married
            Donald McCune on Aug. 6, 1971.

            She graduated from Newcomerstown High School and was a
            former employee of Groovfold, NCR of Cambridge and Weather
            Seal. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Port
            Washington.

            In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother,
            Donald Baker; and a sister, Mary Popko; and two other sisters.

            She leaves four step-sons, Donald (Sharna) E. McCune Jr. of
            Newcomerstown; Patrick Dennis (Vickie) McCune of Massillon,
            Michael David (Cassandra) McCune of Nashport and Shawn Scott
            (Vickie) McCune of Massillon; and many step-grandchildren.

            Friends and family may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Addy Funeral
            Home, Newcomerstown, where services will be 1 p.m Monday with
            the Rev. Lynn McClain officiating.

            Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery, Newcomerstown.

                           Dorothy Mary Fisher Giffen

            BETHESDA — Dorothy Mary Fisher Giffen, 87, of Bethesda, died
            Saturday (Dec. 9, 2000) at Wheeling (W.Va.) Hospital.

            She was born March 1, 1913, in Barnesville, daughter of the late
            Park Edson Fisher and Minnie Foreman Fisher.

            She was a retired elementary school teacher for the Union Local
            School District and Belmont County Schools; a member of
            Bethesda United Methodist Church; and a member and past worthy
            matron of Hazen Chapter Order of Eastern Star.

            In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
            husband, James F. Giffen; a brother, Harold Fisher; two sisters,
            Audrey Fisher Hagan and Inez Fisher Stahl.

            She leaves a daughter, Mrs. David (Jane) Blaney of Bethesda, and
            a son, James (Martha) Giffen of Bellaire; eight grandchildren and
            12 great-grandchildren.

            Friends and family may call at Kelly-Kemp-Braido Funeral Home,
            Bethesda, Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be
            at the funeral home 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Rick Burkhardt
            and the Rev. Doug Lynn officiating.

            NEW CONCORD — Beulah B. Brock, 91, of Zanesville, died
            Friday (Dec. 8, 2000) at her residence.

            She was born Oct. 24, 1909, in Gilbert and was a cook at Perry
            School for 14 years; a 4-H adviser for 35 years and for many years
            did custom butchering with her husband. She was a member of
            Sonora United Methodist Church.

            She leaves two daughters, Wava (Kenneth) Spragg of Zanesville
            and Mary “Katy” (George) Fisher of New Concord; a
            daughter-in-law, Patricia Brock of Zanesville; a sister, Lucille (Bill)
            Ayers of Zanesville; a sister-in-law, Myrtle Ann Brock of Zanesville;
            two brothers, Joe Stevens and Bacil Stevens, both of Zanesville;
            eight grandchildren, Diane (David) Oliver of Sarasota, Fla., Michael
            Brock of Newark, Sharon (David) White of New Concord, Vickie
            (Charles) Garrett of Columbus, Terry Brock of Zanesville, Steve
            (Tina) Fisher of Tiffin, Greg (Diana) Spragg of Zanseville and Myron
            (Cathy) Brock of Zanesville; 15 great-grandchildren, Steve Oliver,
            Chris Oliver, Corey Brock, Casey Brock, Angie Wheeler, Mark
            Wheeler, Jerry Wheeler, David White Jr., Ryan Brock, Kelli Brock,
            Travis Brock, Keleigh Spragg, Tyler Spragg, Danielle Fisher and

            She was preceded in death by her husband, Harmon J. Brock, on
            Mar. 26, 1989; a son, Herbert F. Brock on Aug. 24, 1999; and her
            parents, Joseph Stevens and Nancy Walker Stevens Brock.

                              E. Mabel Rothenstein

            NEWCOMERSTOWN — E. Mabel Rothenstein, 99, a resident of
            the Riverside Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and a
            lifelong resident of Newcomerstown, died late Saturday afternoon
            (Dec. 9, 200) at the Riverside Manor care facility.

            Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be handled by
            Ourant Funeral Home.

                               Sandra Ann Myers

            QUAKER CITY — Sandra Ann Myers, 60, of Quaker City, died
            Friday (Dec. 8, 2000) at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical
            Center, Cambridge.

            She was born April 8, 1940, in Kenova, W.Va., daughter of Paul
            and Margaret Tellis Hammett. She married Kermit Myers on Feb. 2,
            1969.

            She was a homemaker and member of Cambridge Community
            Church; a 4-H adviser for 20 years; Car Teen Program adviser and
            Junior Fair Board adviser.

            In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a
            daughter, Anna Marie; two brothers Bobby and Ronald; and a
            sister, Marsha Weaver.

            She leaves her children, Debbie Grenada of Southgate, Calif.,
            Melissa and Jonathan Elker of Quaker City, Karen and Mark
            Adkins of Quaker City, Patricia Sue Myers of Detroit, Mich.,
            Barbara and Ralph Crider of Brown City, Mich., Kermit and Suzie
            Myers of St. Clair Shores, Mich., and Richard and Barbara Dair of
            Antrim; two grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four sisters
            Paula Hammett of Lisbon, Delphia Riddle of Jacksonville, Fla.,
            Linda and Abe Brookover of Daybrook, W.Va., and Patti and
            Dominic DeleDonna of Euclid; two brothers Eugene and Ida
            Hammett of Newport, N.C., and Paul and Gayle Hammett of Lisbon;
            special friends, Patty and Billy Tarpley, Faith Morris, Priscilla
            Cunningham, Linda and Lester Yoder and Ray and Katie Miller; and
            several nieces and nephews.

                               Nealie M. Morrison

            Nealie M. Morrison, 52, of Cambridge, was called home to her
            eternal resting place on Dec. 6, 2000, in the Ohio Valley Medical
            Center.

            She was born April 24, 1948, in Cambridge, Ohio, to the late Hattie
            and Joseph Morrison.

            Nealie was employed with Federal Mogul Corp. for 32 years. She
            attended the Pentecostal Community Chapel.

            She was preceded in death by her parents, Hattie V. Morrison, who
            died July 8, 1997, and Joseph Junior Morrison, who died Nov. 25,
            1998; a brother John Cecil Morrison; and an aunt, Henrietta Jones.

            She leaves to cherish her loving memory, a daughter, Leatha
            White-McFarren, and son-in-law, Chris McFarren, of Canton, OH; a
            foster daughter, Cristal Pass of Columbus; four brothers, Joseph L.
            Morrison, Lester C. Morrison and Robert Morrison, who live in
            Columbus, and Arthur E. Morrison of Cambridge; a treasured and
            much loved grandson, Christopher Adolf McFarren of Canton; a
            special Godson, Isaiah James McClendon of North Carolina;
            grandmother, Mae Willie Morrison of Florida; and a host of nieces
            and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.

            “Sometimes the road gets so weary, there are times we cannot
            understand but God has promised to keep us always in the hollow
            of his hand.”

            Services will be Tuesday, Dec.12, at 1 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral
            Home with the Rev. Arthur S. Green and Pastor Marie Hanning
            officiating. Per family request, a closed casket will be observed.
            Calling hours will be noon to 1 p.m., one hour prior to services.

            Dinner will be served at the Gross Family Center (formerly known
            as Second Presbyterian Church), 127 W. Eighth St., following
            interment at Northwood Cemetery.
