NEWCOMERSTOWN

Mildred Maxine Funk

Mildred Maxine Funk, 81, a resident of West Lafayette Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, formerly of Wolfe Street, Newcomerstown, and Columbus, died Sunday (Dec. 24, 2000) at the center.

She was born April 11, 1919, in Germano, Harrison County, daughter of the late Joshua H. “Jot” and Jessie Jane (Hoobler) Smith.

Mrs. Funk was a 1937 graduate of Jewett High School. She attended The Ohio State University and the Canton Actual Business College. She was a member of the former St. Peter’s Reformed Church, Germano, and German United Presbyterian Church, also a member of First Presbyterian Church, Newcomerstown.

She retired in 1974 from the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services, where she had worked for more than 35 years. While at the bureau she worked as a secretary in Columbus, and as a supervisor in Coshocton.

She was a 50 year member of Order of Eastern Star O.E.S., Light ‘O’ Day Chapter 472, Columbus, and was a member of Lady’s Shrine Temple, Thea Court No. 5, Columbus since 1968. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority and was elected as their Girl of the Year in 1967.

She enjoyed raising dogs, flowers, gardening and coin collecting.

She leaves her husband, Raymond D. Funk of Newcomerstown, whom she married Dec. 22, 1957; a brother, Marion W. “Bud” (Helen M.) Smith of New Athens; a niece, Shirley S. Smith of New Athens; a nephew, Gary W. Smith of Uniontown; several cousins.

Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at Ourant Funeral Home, Newcomerstown, with services to follow at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Millspaugh officiating.

Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery, Newcomerstown.

Mae King

BETHESDA — Virgie “Mae” (Wheeler) King, 93, of Bethesda, died Tuesday (Dec. 26, 2000) at Barnesville Health Care Center.

She was born July 27, 1907, in New Castle, daughter of the late Dairl and Blanche (Simeral) Wheeler.

Mrs. King was a homemaker and a member of the Bethesda United Methodist Church. She retired from Barnesville Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil King.

She leaves a daughter, Helen Phillips of Bethesda; a son, Francis “Dale” (Barbara) King of Willis, Texas; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Flora Hagan of Jerusalem; her twin brother, Ray Wheeler of Gambier.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Kelly-Kemp-Braido Funeral Home, Bethesda, where services will be 11 a.m. Saturday with Pastor Rick Burkhardt officiating.

Burial will be in Ebenezer Cemetery, Bethesda.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bethesda United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.

Lester Landefeld

WOODSFIELD — Lester W. Landefeld, 84, of Woodsfield, formerly of Keylor Hill Road, died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000) at Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness.

He was born Sept. 8, 1916, in Monroe County, son of the late Herman J. and Freda (Reich) Landefeld.

Mr. Landefeld was a retired farmer, carpenter and school bus driver for the Switzerland of Ohio Local School District. He was a member of Woodsfield Church of Christ, where he had served as Elder from 1967.

He was a U.S. veteran, having served in World War II.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 42 years, Gladys (Egger) Landefeld, who died in 1984; two sisters, Marie Riser and Mildred Christman; a brother, Walter Landefeld.

He leaves his wife, Letha (Garrett) Landefeld; a daughter, Mrs. Michael (Patricia) Antonik of Bellaire; three sons, David (Joyce), Darrell (Beverly) and Duane (Barbara), all of Woodsfield; a brother, Harold of Miltonsburg; nine grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 4 to 9 Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, with services to follow at 2 p.m. Friday, with Sam Bartrug officiating.

Burial will be in Miltonsburg Community Cemetery, Miltonsburg.

Mariella Lawrence

COLUMBUS — Mariella Moore Lawrence, 86, formerly of Barnesville, died Saturday (Dec. 23, 2000).

She was born June 14, 1914.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lawrence.

She leaves her sister, Pauline Eberle of Quaker City; two daughters, Pauline Eberle of Quaker City, and Robin Poses of Westerville; three grandchildren, Eric, Shawn and Erica Poses of Columbus; three nephews, George Osborne of Worland, Wyo., Vaughn Moore of Fostoria, and Lindley Hall of Concord, Calif.; a niece, Judith Lawrence of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and many friends.

Burial will be in Friend’s Cemetery, Quaker City, in the spring of 2001.

Freida Mason

NEWCOMERSTOWN — Freida A. Mason, 88, of Newcomerstown, died Sunday (Dec. 24, 2000) at Union Hospital, Dover.

She was born March 23, 1912, in New Martinsville, W.Va., daughter of the late Nathan and Nancy Beatrice (Calvert) Williams.

Mrs. Mason was a homemaker and a member of Church of Christ of Newcomerstown.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James “Mel” Mason, who died Sept. 1, 1991. They were married Sept. 12, 1945. Also deceased are seven brothers; and five sisters.

She leaves a brother, Alva Ray (Melva) Williams of Port Washington; a sister, Gladeth Ashcraft of Columbus; three sisters-in-law, Mildred Williams of Dundee, Thelma Williams of Dover, and Marjorie Williams of Gnadenhutten; a brother-in-law, Max Stansbery of Newcomerstown.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Addy Funeral Home, Newcomerstown, where services will be 11 a.m. Thursday with Charles Newell officiating.

Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery, Newcomerstown.

Helen Meredith

Helen G. Meredith, 83, of Cambridge, died Tuesday (Dec. 26, 2000) at Red Carpet Health Care Center, Cambridge.

She was born Jan. 5, 1916, in Cambridge, daughter of the late Loren R. and Martha Grace (Shackle) Decker.

Mrs. Meredith was a clerk at Nickles Bakery in Cambridge. She was a member of the former Westminster Presbyterian Church, Cambridge, and a member of the Women’s Bowling Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. Meredith, who died in 1982. They were married Feb. 13, 1946. Also deceased are three sisters, Mary Beal, Ethel Boyd and Kathryn Horton; two brothers, Bud Decker and Lee Decker.

She leaves a daughter, Mary M. Pasciuto of Arkansas; a son, James T. (Sherry) Meredith of Cambridge; a sister, Madeline Crouse of Newark; three grandchildren, Scott (Beth) Meredith, Tiffany Meredith and Jason Leggett.

No calling hours will be observed.

Graveside services and burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Northwood Cemetery, Cambridge, with Evangelist Bruce Daughtery officiating.

Bundy-Law Funeral Home, Cambridge, is handling the arrangements.
