Virginia Mae Smithberger

Virginia Mae Smithberger, 76, of Woodsfield, died Friday (Dec. 22, 2000) at home.

She was born Jan. 20, 1924, in Stanleyville, Washington County, daughter of the late George H. Miller and Wava Virginia Zimmer Miller.

She was a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church, Woodsfield; former 4-H adviser and a member of the St. Sylvester Church Women’s Club.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Ellis Smithberger, who died Oct. 1999; and an infant daughter, Andrea Ellen Smithberger.

She leaves two sons, Donald Smithberger of St. Clairsville and Delbert (Nancy) Smithberger of Woodfield; two daughters, Mrs. David (Mary) Tubaugh of Columbus and Mrs. Jerry (Susan) Cunion of Woodsfield; four brothers, Bemon Miller and Lewis Miller, both of Marietta, Paul Miller of Parkersburg, W.Va. and Dale Miller of Colorado.; a sister, Irma Jean Poole of Marietta; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Friends and family may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Sylvester Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. David Gaydosik officiating. A vigil service will be 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in St. Sylvester Catholic Church Cemetery.

James W. Hammond

NEWCOMERSTOWN — Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ourant Funeral Home for James W. Hammond, who died Tuesday (Dec. 19, 2000) at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Little Rock, Ark.

Mr. Hammond was born in Coshocton Nov. 23, 1947, son of Katherine Jane Albaugh Hammond, Newcomerstown, and the late Alvin L. “Red” Hammond, who died in 1980.

He was a graduate of Newcomerstown High School, Class of 1966, and served in the Navy with the Pacific Fleet out of Long Beach, Calif. He also served a tour of duty on the U.S.S. McKean in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam War. Following his naval service, he was a production foreman and engineer for the General Foods Corp. in Los Angeles, where he was employed for over 17 years. Following this, he worked for Anheuser-Busch Brewery and Dolly Madison in the Los Angeles area before taking a disability retirement from the maintenance department of the Hilton Hotel chain.

He attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in California and belonged to Calvary United Methodist Church while living in Newcomerstown. He was a Little League coach and worked with various sports programs for underprivileged children in Van Nuys. He enjoyed fishing and camping.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cathy Janelle Stevens Hammond, who died April 22, 1987, and whom he married June 24, 1971.

In addition to his mother, he leaves a son, James W. Hammond II, and his fiancee, Catherine Martin of Salt Lake City; a daughter, Mrs. James (Christine J.) Hammack of West Valley, Utah; his fiancee, Judy Virgin Hammond of Gassville, Ark.; a sister, Mrs. Robert J. (Sheila L.) Willer of Newcomerstown; and a niece, Barbara J. Martinez of Columbus.

Friends and family may call 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and one hour prior to the 11 a.m. service Wednesday. The Rev. Marian Glass will officiate.

Burial will be at Peoples Community Church Cemetery, Oxford Township, Tuscarawas County, where Newcomerstown veterans organizations will perform military graveside services.

Memorials may be made to the Calvary United Methodist Church, 5652 Sunset Lane SW, Newcomerstown, OH 43832.

Theda M. Hockenberry

Theda M. Hockenberry, 82, of Cambridge, died Friday (Dec. 22, 2000) at Cambridge Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born April 14, 1918, in Crooksville, Perry County, daughter of the late Everett and Fay (Naragon) Appleman.

She was a member of Unity Presbyterian Church, Cambridge.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles R. Burt.

She leaves her husband, Robert A. Hockenberry of Cambridge, whom she married July 30, 1966.

Friends and family may call noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Scott Funeral Home, where services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Tom Schacher officiating.

Burial will be in Northwood Cemetery.

Lela Lanning

NEWCOMERSTOWN — David A. Ramey, 62, of Port Washington, formerly of Cleveland, died Thursday (Dec. 21, 2000) at his residence.

He was born Nov. 6, 1938, in Sharon, W.Va., son of the late Hobart and Elizabeth Fabin Ramey.

He was a graduate of East Bank (W.Va.) High School, Class of 1956; an Air Force veteran and a self-employed painter and light construction worker for most of his life. He loved taping and listening to country-western music.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers Millard Ramey of Willoughby and Charles Ramey of Sharon, W.Va.

He leaves four brothers, Hobart Ramey Jr. of Painesville, Donald (Judy)( Ramey of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Billy U. (Cynthia) Ramey of Port Washington and Hugh D. Ramey of Tombstone, Ariz.; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a close friend, Mrs. Francis Krall of Euclid.

In keeping with David’s wishes, his remains are to be cremated. No visiting hours will be observed. Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Ourant Funeral Home.
